Shanghai Electronics Fair|China Becomes Largest Source of EU Auto Imports with 1591% Growth in 5 Years

According to the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, on April 1st, the EU released its 2024 trade data for the automotive industry, revealing that China became the largest source of car imports to the EU, with an import value of €12.7 billion. The EU stated that between 2019 and 2024, car imports from China increased by a staggering 1591.3%.

This growth is largely attributed to the strong performance of Chinese new energy vehicles (NEVs). In the first half of 2024, China's NEV exports reached 1.8 million units, with over 35% of this volume going to the European market. Chinese brands such as BYD and NIO have rapidly expanded their market presence through technological advantages and cost-effectiveness. For instance, NIO’s BaaS (Battery as a Service) battery rental model offers monthly fees 30% lower than local electricity prices.

Additionally, reports indicate that Belgium, Spain, and Italy have become active EU buyers of Chinese cars in 2024. In the first four months of the year, a total of 233,000 units were imported, with Belgium accounting for over 40%. Estonia saw a massive increase, with imports growing 45 times to reach 509 units. Romania followed closely with a 20-fold increase, reaching 490 units; Greece grew 3.3 times to 110 units; and Poland saw a 2.8-fold increase, reaching 7,000 units.
